Timpani, or kettle drums, are considered the second conductor of any symphony orchestra or concert band because of their unique role of rhythmic, melodic and harmonic support of the entire ensemble. The timpani are a very demanding instrument because of the skill level required to perform well on the instrument.

Timpani study includes, drum care and maintenance, head changing and head clearing for performance, pitch tuning, mallet grips (German, French, American), proper arm, wrist and finger technique, muffling techniques, roll development and articulation techniques.

Students will learn the proper positioning of the drums, solo and ensemble repertoire and ear training. Students are encouraged to develop their skills through the study of two, three and four drum performance literature.

Assistance is available for regional and state solo contests associated with the school music program.

Review of Dan Adams, April 24, 2009

Dan starts at the correct skills for teaching percussion. He starts with rudiments and the physical approach to the instrument. After this is taught it is carried throughout the rest of the levels of instruction. This causes the student to always learn from the best foundation as they cover various styles and instruments. Absolutely the best there is.

Review of Dan Adams, April 23, 2009

Mr. Adams is very knowledgable in all aspects of percussion. He can work with large groups and with single people. I knows how to push you and make you improve. Anybody would be lucky to take lessons with somebody half as good as Mr. Adams.
