Berlinerweiss is the other German wheat beer (not Hefeweizen)—the one most people have never tried. It was once ubiquitous and beloved in its namesake city, and when Napoleon tried it in 1809 he called it “The Champagne of the North.” Berlinerweiss undergoes a lactic fermentation that gives it its trademark whipcrack acidity. Indeed, it is so tart that it is customary to add raspberry or woodruff syrup to calm things down a bit. The style is also very light in both color and alcohol. Enter Dock Street to change things up. This beer could be the first ever dark (dunkel) rendition of Berlinerweiss. By adding a combination of dark malts for the traditional all-Pilsner malt recipe, this brew appears dark and brooding, but tastes surprisingly upbeat and refreshing. Aromas of earthy hops, raw wheat and figs are followed by bready malt flavors mixed with apple pie, currants and chocolate. At 3.85% ABV it’s perfect as a flavorful thirst quencher.
