Students tied to the academic calendar (that usually means kids) are charged a tuition based on 34 lessons per school year. Summer lessons are a la carte.
Others (usually adults) pay by the month, in advance, on the basis of number of lessons scheduled that month. Many people come weekly for half, three-quarters or a full hour and others find that every 2 weeks fits their schedule and/or budget better. I prefer not to teach 30 minute lessons every 2 weeks. There isn't enough time to do a decent job.
I find that children need weekly lessons to stay focused and making progress, but many adults do just fine every other week. Beginners, however, should devote as much time to lessons as they can. It saves time in the long run by solving problems as they arise instead of after they are ingrained. It can also be somewhat discouraging to begin the piano and weekly updates with an enthusiastic teacher will keep you feeling positive.
