The Pettijohn Piano Studio, in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle, was founded in 2006 with the desire to offer a comprehensive approach to quality musical education in a fun, non-competitive environment for children and adults. Here, creativity and improvisation go hand in hand with technique and piano performance. Whether studying jazz or classical, a beginning student or advanced, each student’s musicianship develops through ear training, sight reading, music theory and composition. And, this year, the studio is introducing ensemble classes. Well developed ensemble skills allow children to do what comes naturally to them, come together and "play."

  • "Fun Motivated Piano Teacher"

Review of Private Piano Lessons at The Pettijohn Piano Studio, October 16, 2008

My daughter has many interests and thanks to Jeff, Piano is at the top of the list. Within weeks she was playing short songs she knew and was very eager to learn more. We thought it might be difficult getting her to practice on a regular basis, as often is the case in childhood music lessons. However, she can’t wait to practice, loves to perform and is eager to demonstrate her progress each week.

Keeping it interesting and engaging kids isn’t as easy as it sounds in any subject. Jeff seems to have a talent for blending encouragement and motivation in a way that makes each lesson a fun learning experience. He is very good at challenging our daughter to do better, but at the same time, he is able to see when something is frustrating her and find fun ways for her to overcome that frustration and actually figure out the problem.

Jeff also attends classes and trainings to keep him up to date and current in the music world. He is flexible with scheduling and obviously enjoys his time with the students. We are grateful to have such a wonderful instructor. In fact, our daughter’s enthusiasm and her performances have inspired our youngest daughter as well. We will definitely choose Jeff when she reaches the age for piano lessons!

  • "versatile personable piano teacher"

Review of Private Piano Lessons at The Pettijohn Piano Studio, September 16, 2008

My daughter started lessons with Jeff when she was 6; we got a recommendation from a trusted friend who thoroughly researches her choices, especially when it comes to activities involving her kids. Jeff is approachable and my daughter liked him immediately, even though she usually prefers female teachers. Now, two years later, she still looks forward to piano lessons, and enjoys practicing because he gives her fun assignments (one of her piano music books came with a CD that she plays along too--she loves that).

He is a skilled teacher who responds to each student according to their needs and interests. A friend of mine had her daughter taking lessons, and what she was doing was very different from what type of music my daughter was playing--he had tailored the lesson to each girl.

It's clear that he enjoys being around kids, and he and the student often is laughing, although he is also definitely in control of the lesson. He just has that natural ability to keep things light while keeping the child on track. He has many techniques up his sleeve. I know four other kids who take lessons from them, and they are all different.

Jeff is so wonderful that now my husband is taking piano lessons from him.
I also appreciate that he is flexible and understanding with scheduling issues, allowing one to change times or days when needed. Really, I only have positive things to say...if you or your child is interested in piano, Jeff is a great teacher to try.
