Time Capsule Necklace

Spring Portland Session with Bridget Benton

Portland, OR

Starting March 11, 2010

Subject: Jewelry Making

The slim rubber tube elements in these necklaces act almost like tiny time capsules, each one holding a tiny roll of paper. Precious words, tiny maps, or objects less than 1/8" in diameter are encased and preserved, becoming part of beautiful and unique jewelry. Learn to make these capsules and incorporate them into highly personal jewelry.

In this class, you'll learn to make your own time capsule beads and combine them with beads and chain to make a beautiful necklace. These can go together pretty quickly, so you may have time to make more than one!

In this class, you'll learn to make your own time capsule beads and combine them with beads and chain to make a beautiful necklace. These can go together pretty quickly, so you may have time to make more than one!

Each time capsule bead is from 1" to 2" long, and has a hollow space in the center about 1/8" in diameter. I have filled these beads with tiny maps, prayers, phrases, vintage text, abstract images, and even tiny seed beads. These time capsules hold your precious missive or fascinating object. Open them - and the necklace is broken; these time capsules are meant for keeping - and only hinting at - secrets.

I'll have papers and maps for you to play with, along with all the ingredients for making these time capsule necklaces: beads, chain, and closures.

Feel free to bring your own bits of maps, or favorite sayings or prayers printed out on regular paper (no cardstock!). Keep in mind that even printed in a tiny font, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to read an entire quote. This is part of the mystery: you'll know what it says in its entirety, others get only a hint. From a distance, the time capsules look like any other bead.

No jewelry-making experience is required to take this class. It's very beginner friendly!

Keep in mind, though, that jewelry-making by its nature requires working with small parts and doing detail work. If you use reading glasses, bring them.

I'm Bridget Benton, and I love what I do. In fact, I founded Eyes Aflame in 2002 just so that I could do what I love to do.

I love to make things. I love to explore and feed my curiosity. I love to see patterns and make connections. And I love to help other people make things, explore, and make connections.

I love that moment when someone's eyes light up because of an insight or an inspiration. And I love helping someone apply that inspiration or insight to craft an innovative solution or express a deep truth. I finally realized that creativity is the skill that ties all these loves together and makes them possible.

So I decided to study creativity in more depth. In 2007, I earned my Master of Science degree in Creativity and Change Leadership from the International Center for Studies in Creativity at the State University of New York (SUNY), Buffalo State College campus.

I've been doing creative work since 1988, with my first real job as a pre-press assistant. I've been a camp counselor; an art teacher; a professional batik and silkscreen artist; a market research project manager; a slam poet; a freelance marketing, communications and administrative assistant; a credit union audit assistant; a consultant working on quality assurance and risk management assessments; and always an entrepreneur. My success in each of these jobs - even those that seem highly analytical - relied on my ability to be creative. And trust me, my clients and my employers noticed. In a good way.

Now, I not only get to use my creative skills, but I get to combine them with my almost 20 years of hands-on experience in marketing, research, and business processes in various industries to help people develop their creative thinking and problem solving skills and apply them effectively. And I still get to make things.

I love what I do.
