Rick Huddle’s work exposes the tender, humorous and, at times, outrageous collision of inner psyche versus personal relationships. His openness, humility, and compelling presence draw the audience into the story as if it were their own. His characters relate to people with their infectious uncertainty, confusion, and desire for connection.
Acclaimed by The Oregonian for his "rubbery face and expressive body language”, his performance is honest and uncluttered with theatricality. In the age of multi-million dollar movies and computer-animated special effects, it is refreshing to hear someone tell their naked truth. This is storytelling in the barest sense of the word.
Drawing on influences of Spalding Gray, David Sedaris, and a dash of Bill Cosby, he performs personal narrative monologues juxtaposing self-deprecating humor with self-honoring ego. He searches for order in the chaos of questions bouncing through our heads.
With a background in theater, improvisation, dance, and music, his stories come out and meet the audience on a visceral level. His characters inspire moments of laughter and intimacy for the audience to reflect and connect both during and after the performance. His performances provide an outlet for people to come together and think about relationships in a new way.
From Washington, DC, to Troncones, Mexico, Rick has performed in nightclubs, theaters, festivals, and intriguing non-traditional settings. In addition to performing to sold-out theaters, he has been commissioned as a storyteller for non-profit fund raisers and performed in community-based ceremonies.
Rick has been a selected storyteller at the NW Folklife Festival in Seattle, Portland’s Tapestry of Tales Festival, and tours of Jackson County Library System in southern Oregon. He was chosen to contribute to a CD celebrating the 10th year of the Stories by the Sea (Newport, OR) festival. Most recently, he has been invited to perform at the San Francisco Fringe Festival.
