Class: Cultivating a Meaningful Relationship with God

In Jewish life and practice, we pray to God all the time, affirming God’s involvement in our ancestors’ lives as well as in our own. We petition God for many things, asking for knowledge, healing, and forgiveness—among other things. And we praise God’s miracles in the world. But rarely do we explore our own relationship to and with God, and our experience of God’s role in our own lives. In this class, we will use traditional teachings about God as well as prayers from the liturgy as a way to explore and deepen our own relationship with G-d. The class will entail a combination of text study, discussion, and experiential learning (i.e. practicing with certain prayers). Although drawing specifically on teachings from the Jewish Tradition, those from all faith traditions will find value in this class.

Rabbi Zari Weiss has been a leader and teacher in the field of Jewish Spirituality and Spiritual Direction for over 15 years. Ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (New York) in 1991, Rabbi Weiss is the Chair of the Committee of Rabbinic Spirituality of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. She has taught and written extensively about the spiritual life, including articles and book chapters on prayer and Spiritual Direction from a Jewish perspective.
