Taming the Elephant in Your Family Room: Parenting in A Media Age Workshop

Do you know what your kids are watching on TV? Do you think MTV just broadcasts music videos? What are the messages being sent through the media, and received within the minds of our kids, who are already inundated in a tempestuous world that elevates the likes of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan, Snoop Dogg, the ruthless pranksters from “Jack Ass”, and the handsome but unfaithful stars of “The Hills” as role models? Even popular network shows like “The Bachelor” and “Desperate Housewives”, not to mention cable programs like “Flavor of Love” or “Shot of Love with Tila Tequila”, send the message to viewers that faithfulness, commitment, and self-discipline are things of the past. Even those of us who are careful and aware, can miss subtle commentary in the shows viewed in our own family rooms. Unless you know what to look for and how to guide your children in their viewing and interpretation of what they see on TV, you might be inadvertently giving tacit approval to things you would never personally condone, just because you have not been alert or actively engaged in dialogue with your kids about what they see and hear on TV, the radio, or in films. And then there’s the internet….need I say more about the importance of knowing what your kids are seeing and hearing?

Well, as summer approaches and our kids have more free time to sit in front of the “Tube” whether it be the family TV or YouTube on the computer, the Sammamish Plateau Parent Networking Group is happy to offer you a chance to hear from a specialist in family and parental coaching about how to “Tame the Elephant in Your Family Room.”
