BIOGRAPHY

Composer/guitarist Tim Edwards, born and raised in the Washington DC area, has studied music with jazz guitarist Paul Bollenback, improvisation with pianist Charlie Banacos from New England Conservatory, and composition with Glenn Smith at George Mason University where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition.

Tim has an extensive musical background and has played with a variety of projects including Windowpane, an electric jazz-rock group popular around the Denver/Boulder CO area during the early 90's; the experimental electronic jazz group Sanskrit; blues/rock band Book of Runes, and original music with his group UVERSA.

Newly based in the Bay Area, Tim currently teaches guitar, theory, composition, ear training and improvisation at Danville Music in Danville, CA.

TEACHING METHOD

Tim’s instruction method is unique; developed over 15 years of teaching all levels of skill and nearly all musical styles. Since Tim believes every student has a different idea of what they want to accomplish musically, he tailors his method to enhance and support the students’ creativity while making sure they learn the skills and techniques needed to be a solid musician. At all levels, performance of music the student enjoys playing is strongly encouraged.

Basic skills include open chord forms, barre chords, major and minor scales, pentatonic scales, rhythm, strumming and picking techniques, and performance. Basic knowledge of guitar maintenance is also stressed so that the student can keep their instrument in top condition and cut down on trips to the repair shop.

Intermediate skills include triad and seventh chord voicings, chord extensions, modes, blues and exotic scales, syncopation, composition, improvisation, and ear training.

At the advanced level students learn more intuitive musical concepts and develop a fluency and command of the entire instrument, both melodically and harmonically. A more thorough understanding of theory, composition, and improvisation is realized.
