I meet with students one-on-one to help them improve their SAT scores, along with their reading, writing, and math skills. I find that quite a few students are intimidated by the test, and when I originally took it, I was no different. What I didn't know was that the SAT consistently tests same skills, and that mastering those skills is not as difficult as it seems! Familiarity with the types of test questions not only ensures that the student has the knowledge needed to do well, but also takes away the panic of facing a "monster" test.
I scored high enough on my own SAT and PSAT to earn National Merit Scholarship finalist status. I didn't know the test was important until then! Now, it seems that everyone knows, and being prepared is more important than ever for college applicants.
But the reason I love teaching the SAT is that the skills needed to do well are also the skills needed to do well in college. I teach students how to improve their reading speed and comprehension, quickly identify an author's argument, write a concise essay, and think creatively about math. It's great.
