Letterpress Printing & Book Making
Subject: Arts and Crafts
This is an open studio class for people who want to work on their own projects at their own pace, or who want to develop their skills in letterpress printing and/or book arts. No experience is necessary to begin to learn the art of letterpress printing, simply a desire to explore the crafts of setting type by hand and hand feeding paper into the press one sheet at a time. Or, learn how to design and create your own books by working with paper, glues, pastes and adhesives, and a variety of binding techniques. Some familiarity with basic bookbinding techniques and terms is helpful and is usually satisfied by taking one of my weekend workshops offered through the UW Experimental College. My studio is fully equipped with many cases of type, Vandercook presses and a 1926 Chandler & Price. There is also a guillotine paper cutter, a board shear, a backing press for rounding and backing books and an extensive reference and artist's book collection.

Pricing Notes:
The class meets every Wednesday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. You can start at any time and continue for as long as you like. It is $75 for four weeks. I have a Letterpress Punch Card...if you come 12 times, the 13th time is free! People often ask if they must come consecutive weeks, and the answer is that I understand that people have busy lives so I do not require that you come every week only that you actually work on and complete your project...for your satisfaction (and mine).

For Bonnie Thompson Norman books are a passion as well as a profession. She has been proprietor of The Windowpane Press, a letterpress printing and book arts studio, for over twenty years. Her mentor in printing has been Saul Marks of The Plantin Press, (Los Angeles) and she has taken workshops from artists and craftsmen such as Mark Andersson, Gary Frost, Daniel Kelm, Susan King, Hedi Kyle, Kitty Maryatt, Dominic Riley, Terry Rutherford and Claire Van Vliet. Bonnie works full-time as a hand bookbinder in a commercial bindery. Evenings and weekends, she teaches classes in printing and bookmaking. Her studio has many things found in a traditional print shop and bindery such as a variety of printing presses, hundreds of cases of type, a guillotine paper cutter, a Jacques board shear and, not the least, a wonderful library. Participants learn how to set type one letter at a time and hand feed pages into a press, or they learn the craft of binding a book by hand, or creating artist’s books. These opportunities and pleasures, not diminished or replaced by the convenience and miracle of the computer age, celebrate the venerable crafts of letterpress printing and book making in a manner both accessible and relevant today.
