Workshops will be offered in English

Why do we need Cross-Cultural Training?

We used to think that if we just studied a foreign language we would be able to communicate effectively with people from that culture. But over the years people realized that it takes more than speaking the language to successfully interact with people from other cultures. As we will learn in this workshop, even with the best intentions we may end up upsetting people because we violate their norms and beliefs. This workshop will give participants a chance to develop interaction skills used among people of other countries by learning more about their communication patterns and culture.

What is Cross-Cultural Communication?

It is difficult to define Cross-cultural Communication in a nutshell. We could say that Cross-cultural Communication is a field of studies concerned with understanding cultural diversity and differences. It provides ways to learn about other people, their languages, customs and social values. By getting to know other cultures we are also learning more about ourselves and about a lot of things and behaviors that we take for granted.

By learning about cultural difference participants will improve their chances for success whenever they interact across cultural boundaries. That ability is called Cross-cultural Communication Competence.

My own definition of Cross-cultural Communication:

"Cross-cultural Communication is the way I allow myself to be open and enrich my own experience through contacts with others. It is also a way to move towards a world where barriers lose their divisive meaning, and this happens not because they cease to exist, but because by getting to know each other better we learn how to move beyond such barriers.
Languages and customs really matter, but they should be brought into a new perspective of mutual understanding."
