ABOUT WASSA DANCE:
Wassa Dance is a lively accessible mix of traditional and contemporary poly-rhythmic movement. Inspired by the elemental roots of African styles and music, this class is suited to all levels of bare foot movement enthusiasts.
ABOUT LARA: Choreographer, performer, teacher, Lara McIntosh has danced all her life and been active in Seattle drum and dance communities since 1992. Lara's afro-fusion dance classes have been independently run and on-going since 1997.
The inspiration for WASSA DANCE came from Lara's cultural study travels to Mali, West Africa.
Wassa is the Bambara name that was given to her there, and translates loosely as "one who acts for joy and fulfillment."
(POSITIVE SWEAT was the first incarnation of this teaching style.)
She also offers residencies in schools locally and intensive retreat style sessions internationally. Community projects include directing ensembles for the Fremont Summer Solstice Parades and Pageants, micro-lending fund raising projects in Africa. Travels for cultural study include trips to Brazil and Mali, Africa.
