Description

Whether you are making documentaries, industrials, independent films or video the perfect harmony of photography and story is the goal of great cinematography. Lensing, focus, exposure, movement, and general framing can all make or break a good cinematography. With this introductory class, students will learn the basics of shot planning, manual image control, camera movement, depth of field, proper monitor calibration, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the digital medium through examples and hands on use of DV and HDV camcorders. Use your camera with confidence and improve the look, movement, and impact of your next project. Excerpts of different cinematic styles will be viewed and discuss as a way to think about the exciting possibilities and limitations of camera work.

W. Jack Strain
W. Jack Strain is a graduate of the Cornish College of the Arts video program and has worked professionally in various capacities on numerous big budget commercials and non-existent budget independent projects. He has built sets, dollies, cranes, and an animation table. He has an intense passion for all moving images and was most recently a finalist in the 1st Ballardian Festival of Home Movies, for which he produced a short film shot and edited entirely on a mobile phone. Currently Jack works at superfad in Seattle
