Review of Private Dog Behavior Consultations , July 25, 2008

After a week of trying to take my pup on a walk, my dog continued to refuse to walk on leash. I wasn't quite sure what to do -- i mean, don't dogs just know how to walk on leash? My friend recommended that I try a puppy class at Ahisma (i signed up -- but the class wasn't starting for two weeks) so I opted to do a private session in addition to the puppy class. This was the *best* decision. In the first 10 minutes I had learned a series of important things:
    (1) If you want your dog to walk on leash, you have to start walking. Once you start walking they really will follow. If you use the command "Let's go" you have to go.
    (2) My dog is not treat motivated, she's toy motivated.
    (3) How to hold my dog and check her ears, paws, teeth etc.

I learned many more basics of interacting and training my dog. It was awesome -- kinda like a private bootcamp for new dog owners. At the end of the session I really felt much less terrified about having a pet. I also feel that the private training was worth it. It was completely customized to my needs, whereas the puppy class was more generic and was largely focused on puppy socialization.

Note: I actually took this class from Grisha, the owner and founder. Her bio can be found here: http://ahimsadogtraining.com/grisha-bio.html
