Saturday 1-5p.m.

Music can offer the writer a soundscape, an atmosphere in which to enhance, ignite and deepen. This class will offer suggestions and lists of resources to search out and put together the soundtrack for your project. This class is for any writer—fiction, nonfiction, poetry, beginning or advanced—who has ever experienced a creative dead end. Bring with you a few short selections of your own work, an array of themes and possibilities, including scenes or lines that have stubbornly resisted your efforts, and we will work with prompts to experience the possibilities of musical ambience as a writing tool. You need no musical background for this class, only the ability to listen with a pen in your hand.

Richard Hugo House is a center for the literary arts that supports writers of all ages and backgrounds and promotes the creation of new writing. Hugo House nurtures writers and readers and brings innovative writing classes to people from every background. Starting in 2006 we began a new initiative to promote new writing across all our programs and to devote one program, the Hugo Literary Series, solely to new commissioned work. Richard Hugo House offers classes, residencies and events. Through our classes, including our flagship program, Hugo Writing Classes, we provide opportunities for writers from age eight to eighty to practice and build their writing skills in supportive, creative and stimulating classrooms. Our residencies offer established writers stipends and/or space to support their work; in exchange, these writers hold office hours and consult free of charge with anyone in the city and region who seek their expertise. Events include our annual Hugo Literary Series, which invites established and up-and-coming writers to create new work and debut it here; the Hugo Writers Fund, a granting program that provides new and emerging writers with space and/or honoraria to produce their own events and premiere new work; and the Hugo Zine Archive and Publishing Project, which maintains a library of over 11,000 handmade and independent publications and offers workshops and classes through an annual DIY Academy.
