Review of Introductory Flight Lesson, November 05, 2008
I've been learning to fly at Wings. I've been through their ground school and am just a couple weeks away from my private pilot checkride--so I've seen their private program almost end-to-end.
In short, Wings Aloft is super awesome. The instructors I've flown with are consistently highly knowledgeable as well as fantastic teachers. Wings has done a good job recruiting a teaching staff with a variety of schedules--so it's possible to mix flying with a busy work schedule, getting lessons in the evenings and weekends.
One of the cool things about Wings is that they are considerably less parental about operating restrictions than many flight clubs. For instance, you can land a Wings plane on grass strips or even on the beach. And because the instructors are super cool, I've gotten to do both of those as part of my training. Wings has a large fleet of Cessna 172s--if that's what you're flying, you'll almost never have problems getting a plane reserved.
The club is also social--there's a clubroom to hang with other members and periodic social events, like a halloween party. There are also a variety of seminars offered free to members from time to time, on topics like flying with GPS or using the glass cockpit in the SR22.
It's worth checking out the the Wings website for the latest schedule of member events--as it looks like they don't always update TeachStreet with everything they're doing.
Last but definitely not least, they take good care of the aircraft at Wings. The aircraft are maintained in good working order, and the few cases I've seen of maintenance issues were addressed expeditiously and competently. I feel consistently safe flying aircraft in their fleet.
