Description
Major Barbara, Heartbreak House, Saint Joan.
To his contemporaries Shaw was an amusing iconoclast and a social philosopher with a strong faith in reason. Cataclysmic events since then have dimmed that view. His glib utopianism seems shallow, his fluent talkativeness tiresome. We don’t trust the liberal verities he championed in play after play after play. We find his paradoxes self-congratulatory. But, like Ibsen (whom he championed), he is a more complex playwright than either fans or adversaries, both then and now, have always recognized. Behind the bright and brittle surface there lurks something like an imp of tragedy.
