Description
Class #1: What is "Terroir"?
Thursday, July 24, 6-8pm
"Terroir" is probably the most misunderstood term in the wine lover's vocabulary. The direct translation is "earth"; the expression of nature and geology through wine, but how can one discern which flavors are a result of the soil and which are the result of a myriad of other variables such as vintage, grape variety, or choices that are made by the winemaker? In this class Tanya Darling will lead students through a tasting aimed at getting to the root of the dilemma, exploring the concept of "terroir" and how one wine can be truly distinctive from it's neighbor. *
Class #2: Riesling
Friday, August 8, 6-8pm
Many Americans fear Riesling as an illegitimate sweet wine, but once you’ve experienced an ounce of her diverse charms, you’ll be hooked on Riesling. Riesling is at once delicate, fragrant and ethereal yet seductively earth bound in her aromas. A great match for anything from strong cheeses to Thai beef satay (and so many things in between), Riesling is truly a food lover’s wine. In this class we will taste Rieslings from the bone dry wines of Alsace to the rich and succulent sweetness of the night harvested ice wines of Germany.*
Class #3: Pinot Noir, the Holy Grail of Grapes
Friday, August 22, 6-8pm
This class will delve into this most illusive of grape varieties. Pinot Noir is a fickle coquette, but once you've tasted how truly mesmerizing Pinot Noir can be when she’s good you may find yourself questing to replicate the experience. In this class we will explore this noble variety, discover some of the great wines that it produces, and how they differ from Burgundy France to the Willamette Valley Oregon.*
Class #4: Que Syrah Sera?
Friday, September 5, 6-8pm
Syrah makes a brooding, deep and meaty wine, which despite its intensity can harbor intricate nuance and subtle minerality. From it’s native home in the northern Rhone Valley of France to far away Australia where they know this variety as “Shiraz”, Syrah can take many forms and when handled with care can tell a detailed story of the land where it was grown. In this class we will explore wines from around the world made with this mighty grape variety.*
*Cheeses and light appetizers will be served.
