Sewing appealing to the masses

In recent years sewing has burst into the mainstream and gaining a younger and more vibrant following. Once thought of as an outdated hobby has given rise to 35 million sewing hobbyists in the US, up from 30 million in 2000. This popularity can be attributed to sites like Etsy, 1000 Markets and the popular reality TV show, Project Runway - where designers compete against each other to see who's design will make it to the red carpet.
Etsy and 1000 Markets both provide users the ability to buy and sell handmade goods on the internet. Both sites take a small cut of the revenue that is gained from the products sold. In exchange they they help market and showcase your work all around the world and giving otherwise a fun hobby a means for another source of income.
Project Runway has helped make sewing cool and hip with the young crowd. Designer are usually given a theme, material, and a limited time to create a peice of clothing that will be judged by other famous designers. This exposure of creating your own clothes has sparked a passion within a new generation. It is now considered cool to purchase your clothes from a second hand shop and sew together a one of a kind piece that no one else has. Image conscious teens have an outlet to express their creativity and showcase their individuality.
