Portlanders are an independent lot with unique needs -- experienced clothier and Portland native Emily Horton of M-Horton Clothing enables the DIY-inclined to make what they need. Emily Horton shares her years of knowledge and experience, helping people learn to make the things they want. At-hand during Open Studio, Emily is available to answer any questions about design elements, fabric choices, or construction technique.
Tucked in the SE industrial arts district warehouse, PDX SEAMSTERS Drop-In Sewing Studio feels spacious and well-lit in it's 1,000 s.f. work space replete with several industrial, overlock, and home sewing machines. Fully stocked with fabrics, notions and the like, the sewing studio can be setup to produce small production runs, one of a kind custom garments, and more usually configured as a cooperative working space for up to eight sewing students.
Emily Horton began sewing at an early age, making her own costumes and clothing. This led to a career in costume design. Studying first at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, she later graduated from Webster University with a degree in costume design and construction. In her professional career Horton has traveled far and wide making costumes for film, stage and theme park attractions, as well as touring nationally with both The San Francisco Opera and The Acting Company. A career artist, Horton has worked in the costume shops of American Conservatory Theater, The San Francisco Opera, Parsons Meares and Michael Curry Design is Scappoose, OR as well as backstage with the Portland Opera, Berkeley Repertory Theater, and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.
The studio is open on an email reservation basis Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturday afternoons. Private lessons are available Monday evening as well as Tuesday and Friday all day. Teens are invited to join in the creative Open Studio fun on Thursdays and Saturdays as well as by private lessons.
