Learn how to create one of a kind Wearable Art with the environment in mind.
By Jill Pillot
13 years ago I opened “Ricochet”, a children, and maternity consignment store in San Mateo, with in mind of recycling gently worn clothes. From there I got inspired and took garments apart, and gave it a new look. I have always had a creative mind, and was always making things from findings, but I felt I lacked technique. I decided to sign up for the Fashion Program at Canada College, where I graduated; first in theatrical costume design, then in fashion design.
For about two years I created and designed costumes for several community theatres. Still not having found my real niche, I tried to combine a little of both, and came up with one of a kind Wearable Art for children, and women, with a European whimsical flair to it.
After participating in a couple of fashion shows and a few fairs with some of my own designs, where the response was beyond my own expectation, I decided to continue and pursue my passion, ripping, and reconstructing sustainable materials into a new fashionable look.
Growing up in many different parts of the world amongst different cultures, I had the chance to be exposed to primitive and contemporary fashionable styles, which I try to incorporate in my work.
Each garment is unique in that I never really know what will come of each piece of fabric until I lay it on the table for it to be ripped apart, and reconstructed into a new wearable piece.
An other passion of mine is teaching; teaching creative sewing classes to young, and adults
Taking it step by step, I would really like to see this line of one of a kind pieces grow, and be an inspiration to others. Be an inspiration to our new and old generation to explore their creativity by keeping the environment in mind, and staying Green.
