Sewing Machines-Which One Shall I Buy!??

Posted by Tish Chacon on July 10, 2009

There are sewing machines and there are SEWING MACHINES. Its always the same question, "What kind do I buy?". I hear it from all my students. My answer is usually the same, "You need to go try many machines before you buy." There are so many machines and some are not very good and wont last long. You need to go look at all your options.

There are so many sewing machine options. Go and sew on machines. Take a few squares of cotton fabric and try lots of machines. Try there features and decide which ones you can not live without. For myself I prefer Bernina. I have an old 1090 that I love. I am looking at getting a new one soon.

What I love about my machine is:

Knee bar that lifts the presser foot and lowers feed dogs. Used in combo with the 2 way foot petal I can hold 2 pieces of fabric with my hands, use my knee to lift the presser foot then use my heal to make the needle go into the fabric to hold it. My most favorite feature. If you are not useing yours you are missing out!

My second favorite is the automatic needle stop up or down, it acts a third hand.

A mending stitch, if I stretch it out it makes a nice wavy stitch I like to use on the binding of baby quilts.

My reverse, I can push a button and it continually sews in reverse.

My machines memory, I can program several stitches together and it can remember.

Dont forget to clean & oil your machine according to the manual
