Balkan Singing Basics
Folk songs from the Balkans have a sound and style all their own. From the complex ornamentation of Bulgarian Thrace to the plaintiff songs of Serbia, this music is rich and complex -- and a joy to sing!

In my lessons I teach the basics of Balkan singing: vocal placement, ornamentation, phrasing, harmonization, and pronunciation, along with (of course) basic "good" singing technique. We will explore various styles and regions to find which ones you like the best, and work on specific techniques for each song.
About me: I am a lifelong musician with training in classical and Balkan music. I have sung and performed Balkan music with various ensembles since 1997, and have studied with Tatiana Sarbinska, Tzvetanka Varimezova, Kremena Stancheva, Merita Halili, and Dragi Spasovski. Currently I am the director of Dunava, a Balkan women's vocal ensemble in Seattle, and I sing and play Bulgarian tambura with Orkestar RTW.

Review of Balkan Singing Basics, April 21, 2009
By way of disclaimer, I haven't actually taken a lesson with Dina - but I've listened to her for a long time and am a classically trained singer myself. Dina turned me on to Balkan music several years ago and it was an eye opener. The rhythms of the music, the infectious energy and the tonal placements all make this style of singing both enjoyable and a worthwhile "training" experience for any type of singer. An experience with Balkan music will definitely make you re-focus on your fundamentals for vocal placement and counting - when's the last time you sang in 11/16 or 15/16 instead of 4/4 and 3/4 meter?
