A new addition to the rhythm section workshops is called Dueting with Greta. This concept was born from the late night, after hours spontaneous duets I often instigate at the end of some of our workshop performance nights. When the students performances were done, I'd ask if anyone would like to come up and join me and the band in an unrehearsed duet on a song of the students choice. This has created some real fun moments for all of us on stage and really offers a student the chance to find how truly impromptu jazz can, and should be.

It will now be offered as an option in addition to the regular workshops.

A student may choose to do a duet or two with me in the final performance as a part of their 4 or 8 song set. They should choose songs they know quite well and we will run them in rehearsal leaving as much room for improvisation as possible between the two of us. We may trade lines or sections of a song, harmonize and even scat a bit, but all in very "in the moment' type of way. It's my goal to allow students to feel comfortable on stage with me and feel assured that they can try some things they may be afraid to try alone. There is no additional charge for this. If you'd like me to join you, just ask and I'd be glad to. Please be prepared with several songs that we can "play" with throughout the workshop month.

Review of Greta Matassa, May 07, 2008

Greta Matassa's workshop has to be the coolest and most educational experience I've had with music in a long time. Not only do you get an opportunity to work with Seattle's beloved Greta, you couldn't ask for a more talented ryhthm section. I found that being involved with such lofty talent was intimidating at first, but the atmoshere is certainly the opposite. I wanted to do my best and found that I was practicing more than ever and coupled with private lessons blew away my friends and family at the showcase presented at Tula's. This is not only a great place for singers, but instumentalists as well. I worked with a sax player at my workshop and we heard a violinist as well! So much fun! Do it!
