As a seasoned professional, With 25 years of singing in concerts and nightclubs, there's nothing I enjoy more than helping budding singers. Whether they be young ambitious semi pro's or housewives, business people, closet, shower and car singer's that really want to try this. Watching you get a taste of how fun this is and how rewarding this music can be in your life is a thrill for me! You can do this!!
I teach from my home in West Seattle. All levels. Men and women ages 12 and up. We work on repertoire, phrasing, scat, rhythm and improvisation as well as proper vocal techniques of breathing, support and range. I help students develop a practice routine that is fun, builds strength and produces results. I've coached many of the areas winner's of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festivals and Kobe Jazz competition and helped start the careers of many of the areas current jazz headliners.
I know over 2,000 jazz standards, and work with students using a series of accompaniment recordings of over 300 well-known standard songs from the great American songbook (see list). These songs can be modified to each student's key and tempo preference. I also have the digital technology to remove the vocals from some existing commercial cd's to make custom rehearsal cd's. Each lesson will be recorded to a cd for easy practice access. In addition to your practice cd you will hear at each lesson a compilation of various great jazz singers recordings of the songs you're working on! This is in keeping with my philosophy that learning from the "Great's" is always a part of jazz!
Also, for those singers wishing to pursue a career in music I share vocational advice from my experience in many areas of the music business: getting gigs, private parties, night clubs, recording demos, advertising work, etc.

Review of Voice Lessons, October 28, 2009
My experience with Greta has included both private study and participation in the rhythm section workshop. Not everyone with such incredible talent is able to convey information to others effectively, but Greta's genuine interest and natural giftedness as a teacher sets her miles apart. Each private session I have taken has been specifically tailored to what I wanted or needed to work on. The rhythm section workshops were a practical way to learn how to work with instrumentalists. Workshop participant were encouraged to attend the entire evening and this not only fostered camaraderie between the students but also allowed us to learn from each other's sessions. Many nights I learned things I didn't know to even ask about just by observing. My advice is to attend as much as the workshop as your time permits. Whether your goal is to get grounded in the fundamentals, explore improvisation or learn specific tunes, you will benefit from studying with this skilled and supportive teacher.

Review of Greta Matassa, May 07, 2008
Greta Matassa's workshop has to be the coolest and most educational experience I've had with music in a long time. Not only do you get an opportunity to work with Seattle's beloved Greta, you couldn't ask for a more talented ryhthm section. I found that being involved with such lofty talent was intimidating at first, but the atmoshere is certainly the opposite. I wanted to do my best and found that I was practicing more than ever and coupled with private lessons blew away my friends and family at the showcase presented at Tula's. This is not only a great place for singers, but instumentalists as well. I worked with a sax player at my workshop and we heard a violinist as well! So much fun! Do it!
