    • I remember when I was backpacking through Central America and Mexico, I definitely didn't worry about making mistakes. I tried my best to speak Spanish all the time and the folks I spoke with were always very forgiving to me, so I may have had a better experience than most.

If there was 1 thing you could tell people to do to overcome the fear, what would it be?

Ricardo's Spanish Tips - Tip #1: Difference between ser and estar.

Posted by Ricardo Drouyn on April 14, 2009

In any basic spanish course, you may have encountered some difficulties understading the difference between the verbs ser y estar. These two verbs might be confusing if your native language is english, as they both mean 'to be' but are used in slightly different circumstances.  So, in which situation should one be used over the other? Well let's get into that!
In english, the verb to be is used to convey properties of an object that never change as well as temporary states of an object that might not be correct in the future. However, in spanish this is not the case. Generally, the verb ser is used to indicate some property of the object that is permament where estar is used to indicate some temporary property. Lets see an example of this:
- Richard is very smart.
- Richard is ill.
The first...

Why people are learning Spanish in Seattle?

Posted by Urania Perez on March 30, 2009

I am the owner of a small business called Spanish In Seattle. I started the business two years ago with the idea of providing a customized private lessons to individuals or small groups. I heard a lot of stories about why people need to learn the language, or choose to learn it now. Here are some of the stories:
- I am Social Worker and I got a promotion where I need to speak Spanish with my clients. Many other Social workers also need it for their job in schols and hospitals.
- I am nurse or medical assistant and I need Spanish to talk to my patients.
- I work in a computer store and I need the language to get "the edge on my next promotion". Good idea.
- I am a preformer, piano player and need to improve my pronunciation as I sing songs in...

    • Great! I would recommend posting a picture for your profile and class page. Photos help you rank higher in search results and make you eligible for showing up on our homepage. Teachers with photos and reviews are more likely to be contacted by a student. Thanks for listing your classes and article on TeachStreet.

How to tell the difference between Spanish dialects

Posted by Dave Schappell on February 12, 2009

1) Spanish spoken in Latin America is the most common Spanish dialect. Each country in Latin America has it's own accents and vocabulary and slang. What makes the dialect consistent is that speakers tend to pronounce each letter in a word, and they speak with a strong (rolled) "r" sounds.2) Castillian Spanish is spoken in Madrid and northern Spain. The most obvious difference between Castillian Spanish and the Spanish spoken in Latin America is the "th" sound replacing the "s" sound. For example, you'll hear "gratheas" instead of "gra-see-us" for thank you (spelled "gracias"...

I'm really glad I learned how to speak Spanish

Posted by Gracie on February 12, 2009

What was the best part about learning Spanish?  Spanish and English are neck-and-neck as the second most spoken language in the world. As of 1999, Spanish had 332 million speakers, while English had 322 million.  However, in the US, the state of California alone has 5.5 million people who speak Spanish at home with high populations in Texas (3.4 million), New York (1.8 million) and Florida (1.5 million) as well.  That said, the best part about learning Spanish was knowing that I could practically travel any where in the world and...

    • I can definitely relate to the top three difficulties you stated. My native language is Farsi, and I am far from mastering it as I don't practice enough. When I traveled to Iran for a summer, I became very proficient. Sometimes living in the country that speaks the language you want to learn, is the most effective way to do it. Unless, like you said, you have a lot of practice partners around.

Backpacking in Central America / Mexico with Minimal Spanish

Backpacking in Central America / Mexico with Minimal Spanish

Traveling the world nowadays, you can get away with speaking English pretty much in any country. You’re bound to meet folks who speak it. Although, do you really want to be the stereotypical American locals picture us to be? I don’t think so, and I definitely didn’t want to be when I was traveling through Central America and Mexico. After college, I planned to do some traveling outside of the United States to see what’s going on in the world around me. My natural direction was to head down south, which resulted in my amazing backpacking adventure...

    • Awesome tips on traveling, Joseph. I was recently in Cabo, and I can attest to what you are saying about attempting to speak the foreign language before your native one. Sounds like an awesome trip!

    • It definitely was an awesome trip. I love immersing myself in other cultures and seeing what comes of it. Attempting to speak the native language is always a good start to any conversation in another country. Can't wait for my next adventure.
