Losing the Fear of Making Mistakes

Posted by Mesoamerica Institute on May 21, 2009

As a Spanish Instructor at Mesoamerica Institute I have learned a lot about how challenging and rewarding it can be to learn a new language. I have witnessed students come into a new class and being very afraid of making mistakes in their pronounciation or grammar. My job is to help them forget about their fear of making a mistake so that they can go ahead and speak whether they sound perfect or not. I remind them constantly that perfection will only come with the practice of doing it. After a few classes, I am always happy to see the students go for it. As soon as they stop caring about making the mistakes, their learning begins.

    • I remember when I was backpacking through Central America and Mexico, I definitely didn't worry about making mistakes. I tried my best to speak Spanish all the time and the folks I spoke with were always very forgiving to me, so I may have had a better experience than most.

If there was 1 thing you could tell people to do to overcome the fear, what would it be?
