The Civil War Beyond the Battles: Stories Lesson

The Civil War often evokes references to names of battles and generals. Within the big story lies a series of failed attempts to reach political and social compromises that could have avoided the war.
We will look at those early ante-bellum events and the roles they played in the secession and the war.

During the war years we will see the changing objectives and motivation of the Union; the near intervention of England, France and Russia; the political dilemmas of Lincoln; the political and economic implications of several military campaigns; the collapse of the Confederacy; and the war’s legacy for the next century.
