Enviromental conservation has been all the rave the last couple years. Huge corporations are moving to greener office environments, families are turning last nights dinner into tomorrows compost, it seems like everyone is going green.  Feeling blue that you are left out of the green?

Shaving Green: Less plastics

Posted by RetroRazor on March 05, 2009

How does double-edge shaving affect the surrounding world? There are definite ecological and environmental benefits!Handle: The RetroRazor is constructed of a hefty copper alloy and chrome. It will last for years of service without becoming obsolete. When it does wear out, it can be fully recycled.Disposable Razors are a travesty - with 98% of the Razor being plastic, and with the metal blade embedded, they are not practically recyclable.Blades: The double edge blades used in Safety Razors are incredibly resource efficient - it is just a single strip of metal! We used to...

Getting Rid of the MAC

Getting Rid of the MAC
no more lead!

When MAC hit the stores back in the 90s's I was ALL about it, the
beautiful colors lasted, especially on my lips.  I would never leave
the house without them being painted that deep luscious shade of
aubergine or candy apple red.  I was intimated by those who could walk
around in pale sheer or pink gloss or even those who were totally
bare.  No not me, never.  I was a painted girl, that is until last
year... AND now the time has finally come, all the MAC is going back...
back to be recycled.
Every single minute, 1,484 tubes of lipstick are sold in the United
States.  I was certainly a part of that habit for a long time.
Ingredients that harm
Here are the facts:  on average, women who use cosmetics will
consume 2 pounds of lipstick in their lifetimes, it's on your lips,...

    • Wow I can't imagine what 2 pounds of lipstick would look like!

    • Thanks for giving alternatives to MAC and generic lipsticks - I'll confess to being a bit of a lipstick fiend. Do you have a favorite?

How I discovered the secret to the Ultra-Close Shave (and saved hundreds of dollars!)

Posted by RetroRazor on February 18, 2009

I used to be a tour director for Rick Steves, and while travelling
through Italy, in the Cinque Terre, I discovered the secret to the
Ultra-Close shave:It was a classic Safety Razor. Just like Grandpa used.I was
surprised that fashion-forward Italian Men and Women used old-style
shaving, but as I learned more, I came to understand that the...

    • I'll second that! I now get great shaves at about 1/30 of the cost. I started out with a simple Merkur Heavy Duty, then moved up to a Merkur Futur.

What's your weapon of choice, Chai?

    • Posted by RetroRazor on February 18, 2009
    • I have a wide range of tools: Weishi is my daily razor with Derby Blades, but love my Merkur Slant, Schick Krona (one of my latest aquisitions), and Gillette Superspeed.

When I teach classes, I suggest the Weishi starter kit that we sell on Amazon: www.RetroRazor.com

Liked your India article: did you pick up any Treet blades? Or Godrej creams?

    • I've been hearing a lot about these safety razors. My friend told me to get one last week and pointed to the website you mentioned Chai. Funny how the word gets around.

    • @Chai Thanks - I had a great time in India! I didn't pick up any cool blades or anything while I was there - I did see lots of straight razor shaving on the streets, but was way too chicken to get one.

    • @Joseph - I can give you a demo sometime if you'd like - I don't have any plans go back to my crummy Mach3. Badger and Blade (http://badgerandblade.com/) is also a great resource for getting info, as well as a number of videos available on youtube (a bunch of them are also on retrorazor)

Green-Up Your Day

Posted by Veronica Winsch on February 17, 2009

Green-Up Your DayBy Veronica WinschCopyright 2007More and more we are thinking of ways to be “green”, have less of an impact on our environment, lighten our carbon footprint.  I recently finished reading The Green Book The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M. Kostigen www.readthegreenbook.com.  I must admit, reading this book left me felling overwhelmed.  There is so much we do that has a negative impact on our planet.  Of course, there are obvious choices that are more responsible.  Like driving a Prius instead of an Escalade.  We can bring a canvas bag when we go shopping.  We can choose not to litter.  We can teach our kids to think of the bigger / planet-sustaining picture as they mature.  But beyond these common acts there was stuff that really opened up my eyes.  Like the choice of voice mail over an answering machine!  Can you believe it?  When you consider the millions of phones and answering machines plugged into the wall, sapping electricity twenty-four hours a day, you start to get a picture of small choices with big impact. The idea behind this book was to have the reader consider each choice and multiply it by 200 million or so.  Yeah – big stuff!  And that can be overwhelming. For me, the most egregious offense I have seen in the past ten years is bottled water. Single-serving beverages in general, they are everywhere and mostly packaged in plastic.  Have you noticed all the real estate taken up by beverages at your grocery store and deli?  There is no more room there...

    • Simple and direct. Change one aspect of your life and remove bottles of water from your life. I'm all for this. I've always thought bottled water was the biggest scam ever. If you do get bottled water, though, remember to recycle the bottle and throw the cap away in the garbage. The caps aren't recyclable.

Also, in the office we have a lot of folks using Sigg water bottles, so yay Green!
