For years now I have been working in series, groups of photographs, whose meaning for me as well as for the viewer should exceed the sum of the meaning of each photograph. Each image works there as a letter works in a word, a word in a sentence, a paragraph, a chapter, or a short-story. A tremendous part of the final work results from the editing and the sequencing of photographs. The process makes me spend extended periods of time with my images, physically and mentally. It becomes a very introspective process as "I am the very matter of my work" (Montaigne). The time spent in the presence of one's images also creates a strange relationship where distance and depth grow. The distance is the one that is accomplished when one steps back from the object of their focus, it is a contemplative distance, one that allows connections, associations, and meaning to emerge.
