I have a LOT of energy, and 2 of my favorite ways to apply that energy are learning and teaching. It feels a little strange to consider myself an "expert" in certain fields, but I have spent a lot of time refining a few skills that I love sharing with anyone who's interested.
DANCE:
Swing dancing is the ultimate recreational combination of 3 great loves of mine: people, movement, and music. I specialize in teaching beginner dancers, which requires not only a technical grasp of the mechanics of the dance but also a solid understanding of the psycho-social dymanics of learning a new partnered skill. Oh, and making people laugh...laughter is an ESSENTIAL part of the learning process!
DIGITAL STORYTELLING:
"Digital storytelling" generally refers to the art of combining digital still photos, narration files and music using video-editing software to create a 3-5 minute long story. While working for the Seattle-based nonprofit Bridges to Understanding (www.bridgesewb.org) from 2005-8 I taught at digital storytelling workshops for both adult teachers/volunteers and children locally and abroad. I am comfortable teaching the technological elements of digital storytelling (basic digital photography, Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements, PhotoStory for Windows, and Windows Movie Maker) in addition to the soft skills elements (how to tell a story visually, storyboarding, editing, and script-writing).
Things Cheryl Crow wants to learn:
-
1.
Spanish
I started in high school and love the way the language sounds, plus it'd be really great to be able to communicate with the Spanish-speakers I encounter!
-
2.
Animation
I'd love to be able to make little funny animations to accompany educational songs/poems or to use as gifts for friends or myriad other uses...it's a skill I've always wanted to cultivate
-
3.
Swimming
I've always wanted to do a triathalon but the swimming part has scared me; it's time to take this on!

I took Lindy Hop swing dancing classes with Cheryl (and Chris Chapman) and I have to admit that I had a blast! They took a room full of two-right-footed-folks and made us semi-passable around the dance floor. Within minutes, they had us dancing, sweating, smiling and having fun -- I'd highly recommend Cheryl and Chris!

Ok, so Cheryl is a total blast to have as a teacher. First, she is an awesome swing dancer and will teach you how to execute the moves flawlessly. Second, she really does a great job of going around the room and working with people to help them out with all aspects of the move they are working on. Third, she has a super upbeat personality and will inspire you to just go nuts and have a great time. I would compare Cheryl to the bus on Speed the movie (ya know with Keanu?), except for her, she has to keep moving or smiling continuously, otherwise she will explode. If you have a chance to take a class with Cheryl, you will come out of the class with a smile on your face and ready to go social dancing.
