CMC Inc. was founded in 1960 by a group of parents and interested citizens to help maintain the Center as a City facility, providing scholarship assistance and tuition subsidy through year-round fund raising. With the help of generous donors including John & Betty Gray and Robert Oringdulph, CMC Inc. played a vital role in the remodeling of the 1912 firehouse, a designated Portland Historic Landmark, as a permanent home for the Center.
CMC is a non-degree-granting music school and a meeting place for musical activities. Its purpose is to make excellent musical training and experiences available to as many people as possible at an affordable cost. CMC occupies a beautifully remodeled 1912 firehouse and is a program of Portland Parks & Recreation in partnership with the nonprofit Community Music Center, Inc.
