I teach private viola lessons in North Bend, Snoqualmie, and I'm just 15-20 minutes from Eastgate/Issaquah. I specialize in middle school and high school, and I also have a lot of experience with adult students.
My primary focus during lessons is on improving technique and producing beautiful, warm viola sound. I try to provide easy-to-remember tricks and methods for practicing technique - if you don't understand the cause and effect of what your hands and arms are doing, you can't improve.
Many of my former high school students have earned viola scholarships for college, won accolades at state and national contest, and have continued on to conservatory programs.
Adult students require a different approach to learning string instruments, and over the years I have developed some pretty entertaining methods using technology (meaning whatever's on your iPod) to help adults either learning viola for the first time, or trying to remember how to play the viola from earlier in life.
I never played the violin! A lot of professional violists started out on violin and switched later, but I started playing viola very young. So I prefer to only teach viola. I also coach string quartet, chamber music, and help with audition or contest preparation.
My two rules about viola lessons:
1. You have to have fun or it's not worth it, and
2. I will always answer the question "Why?" and never give you work to do for no reason
If you're interested in meeting up for a trial lesson, there's no fee. I like to have a "no pressure" meeting with students and their parents and play for a little while, then let you decide if we're a good match.
