Review of Gary Haig Schultz, October 21, 2009

About me: Adult male, Busy schedule, Not especially talented, Having a a ball playing piano!
About my Kids: Girl 9 years old and very precocious, Boy 4 years old and a little "wild man"
About Gary Haig Schultz- The Piano Man: Can't say enough about Gary... He's the nicest, most talented and intelligent teacher I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If he could clone himself this world would be a better place.
I always wanted to play the piano but had no clue that I could actually do it. I bought a beautifully restored piano from Gary (he's also a well-known piano technician) and convinced him to give my daughter lessons (he was impressed with her natural ability to pick out tunes by ear), and not only is she doing beautifully and enjoying playing, but we started giving my four year old son lessons who normally can't sit still for more than 1 minute and he is actually practicing without any arm twisting from us! Gary has amazing patience and customizes his teaching approach for each student so as to make a connection with them. I come from an educational background and this is so important and RARE to find in a teacher.
So I decided to try my hands (pun intended) and I'm already playing tunes I love. His teaching methods are structured without appearing to be structured, as if he sees the Big Picture and somehow focuses on your strengths in a way that makes learning fun. His lessons ain't cheap, but they are worth every penny and both my daughter and son are further along in their studies after 6 weeks than my neighbor's kids who have been taking lessons from a different teacher for over a year. As for me, I never expected to be able to play at all so I'm thrilled with myself, plus it helps the kids to see Daddy practicing the piano and enjoying playing so much.
All and all, this whole experience is one of the most gratifying of my life and I'm not exaggerating..

Review of Gary Haig Schultz, October 16, 2009

Gary Haig Schultz truly is "The Piano Man" ! I'm married with two young children and a full time job but ever since I started taking lessons with Gary I find myself always making the time to practice. I started playing when I was a little girl but quit in Junior High and since then I've been through four different piano teachers. Not that they were bad teachers or unfriendly in any way, but they just didn't understand what it was that I wanted to get from my lessons. So I would start out excited about my new teacher and then become more and more frustrated until I would just quit. Then I met Gary at my cousin's wedding (he was playing keyboards in the band) and fell in love with his musical style. I had to "twist his arm" but got him to agree to give me lessons. After my first lesson I was so psyched that I went out and bought a better piano (and I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination). It's now two years later and I can honestly say that my enthusiasm has not diminished one iota. I'm playing music I always dreamed of playing in a style that is perfect for me and I know why. Our first lesson he spent half the lesson finding out what I WANTED to get out of my music instruction, and every lesson since he has taken me there --- WAY BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS. Not only am I playing much better than I ever dreamed, but I'm actually LOVING IT.
PROS: Highly Intelligent, Articulate, Professional but not rigid in his teaching methods, Master of Classical, Pop, Jazz, Rock, Ethnic, and every other genre I am aware of, Funny as hell, Patience of a Saint, Loves children (and pets), a real "people person" and all around kind and soft-spoken gentleman. Plus he knows an amazing amount of detail about pianos in general.
CONS: He has a very busy schedule and can only teach me one 90 minute lesson every three weeks, but he gives me enough material to keep me more than occupied in the interim, and if I have any questions he is happy to take my telephone calls and answer them.
Unfortunately for me, he is planning on moving back to New York in early October, 2009 and I am devastated. I'm trying to work out a "lesson-by-video" arrangement with him and pray he can accommodate me. I feel as if I'm losing my best friend :'''-(
