TeachStreet is Closing
I have been playing drums for over 15 years now; teaching for about half of that. I have taken lessons from about a half dozen teachers in my years of playing trying to learn all styles of music. I still take lessons to this day, when time permits, for constant growth and humble refining. I have sold drums as a top national salesman for a major retail chain for 7 years also. I now run my own business designing and building custom drums and repairs, and do drum lessons during the week. I have also toured playing for bands and also as a road crew drum tech for national acts. There isn't something with drums that I haven't tackled!
As a younger player I can connect better with any age and younger students, although I have taught from ages 7 - 65 without a hiccup.
I predominately drive to the student's house. This is key in the initial progression of the student. I can sit in and help properly setup the drumkit and teach on how to tune the drums, which is commonly overlooked because there is no right way to tune like piano or guitar. I also can make adjustments on the drums and hardware, and recommend things as we go.
Driving to the student's house also makes for a more comfortable relaxed environment. Also for the parent to be able to carry on with normal daily life without another interruption of the errand of driving to and from and waiting for the lesson itself.
I work with the student to teach what they are looking to learn. Some old-school teachers only start for months on end just on technique and a boring practice pad without even getting on the drumset. I ultimately will teach everything as we go. Technique is the foremost key and reading/writing and understanding drum notations starts from the beginning. But, we also go on the kit and learn the basics of rudiments, drum beats, and fills all within the first lesson. Everything is a constant progression of growth and understanding.
I teach mainly 1 hour lessons, typically once a week or every other week. Anything can be arranged depending on schedules.
