In recent years, many have come to consider Portland a sewing mecca. Back in the 70s, however, fashion sewing enthusiasts had to search hard to find high quality fabrics. In 1976, Josephine's opened on the 2nd floor of the Galleria and set out to change all that. They sought out natural fibers from all over the world and stocked the store with unusual patterns and buttons. The cheery store mascots were Josephine and Napoleon, two finches whose chirping and occasional escape attempts into the Galleria rafters kept everyone entertained.

Josephine's quickly gained a reputation as one of the most diverse and high quality fabric stores on the West Coast. As buyer and manager, Judith Head built up sales contacts by traveling to the fashion district of New York City, the store also became known as a haven for high fashion sewing.

Now, after two relocations and a change of ownership, Judith is looking to the future. She's seen a resurgence in sewing in recent years and hopes to encourage even more interest through classes and store events.
