Joyce Major taught middle-school math and sold real estate before a curiosity about the world propelled her on a year-long solo trip around the world as a reporter and teaching English, archaeology, restoration and volunteering with wildlife at a sustainability sanctuary, 11 countries in all. The book she co-authored about her year of volunteer travel, Smiling at the World: A Woman's Year-long Quest for Adventure and Love, was published in November 2007.
