Julie Cohn Biography

Julie Cohn became intrigued with drawing and painting when she was nine years old. Swept up into the world of her artistic mother, Julie painted with her in different art studios. After attaining two art degrees, a BA at U.C. Berkeley (Art History Minor), a BFA at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, and a college teaching credential, Julie pursued her career as an artist and teacher in watercolor painting, oil painting and cartooning.

Julie’s paintings have been shown in many local and national shows and in museums in Ohio and San Francisco. On numerous occasions, her body of artwork and writing entitled, “Athletes of the Spirit: An Exploration of Disability Through Art and Writing” and her currently developing body of artwork, “The Color of Black and White: Portraits and Figures”, have been featured in local and national art magazines. Julie’s series of DVDs, “The Dance of Watercolor” is continually being developed. Since its debut in 2005, close to 3,000 copies of her first DVD, “The Dance of Watercolor Beginners and Beyond” have sold nationally. She is now completing her 2nd DVD, “The Dance of Watercolor Luminosity, Luster and Iridescence.”

Julie’s art demonstrations and lectures are enjoyed by many art groups in California. She has been a watercolor show juror and is active in the California Watercolor Association. In her art studio in Berkeley and at the College of Marin, Julie instructs in the areas of design, landscape, still life, portraits and figures. Her illustrations have been used for art magazines, book covers and children’s books. Julie also sings jazz and plays jazz guitar in the Bay Area.
