Review of Kevin Ruse, March 26, 2009
Kevin is a very informed instructor. If he didn't have the answer, he didn't hesitate to find it. Easy to follow along. I've been in some other classes where the instructor jumped around and didn't follow through on the topic that he started with. Kevin was not like that at all. If the subject strayed from where it was supposed to go, he didn't forget to get back to it. I would absolutely take another class from him.

Review of Kevin Ruse, February 11, 2009
This two day class was well paced for our staff who attended this class. I highly recommend. We began with the basics, and had practical excercises to keep what we were taught in mind as we progressed in the training. Everyone agreed we had plenty of time to be creative, while the support of the instructor kept us on pace with the many things we were learning about this program.
I am looking forward to attending the next class in this series, and hope sincerely that Kevin will be our instructor.

"Great job teaching xml to beginners"

Review of Kevin Ruse, February 10, 2009
Kevin gave about 15 of us a multi-day xml / xml schema training several years ago. (2 days? 3 days? I forget) We are a group of fisheries biologists and computer programmers, none with substantial xml experience and most with no meaningful exposure to xml at all before the training. He did an excellent job bringing us all along quickly. XML is a big subject, and you shouldn't come out of a 2-3 day training expecting to be able to implement complex schemas and program against them right away. Kevin gave us what we needed to know to be able to read and understand the "Definitive XML Schema" book by Walmsley, and pointed us in useful and appropriate directions. XML is a complex subject with multiple ways to go and significant decisions to make early on when trying to design a schema and programming system. Thanks to Kevin we have been able to continue learning on our own, and I personally have designed schemas for delivering our very complex data in real time. We have implemented one or two applications for consumption by others, and are working on more. I have also been able to understand and use and modify xml schemas written by others such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (www.gbif.org) and the Metavist metadata creation program made by the U.S. Forest Service. I've even found and reported errors in schemas that have been used for years by other people. This is all from Kevin's course plus consulting the Walmsley book which he provided to us for his course. (In my experience xml software, while pretty much a necessity for designing schemas, does not have useful help for understanding xml itself. And the Walmsley book, while definitive, is very difficult to jump into without knowing where you're going already because one page references another references another, etc. You don't want to be without this book, but you need someone like Kevin to give you the background to know how to use it.)
Just as importantly, Kevin taught us when xml is not the appropriate technology. We had been thinking of doing some things that xml is not the right tool for. We saved many many months of effort and expense thanks to the understanding we gained from Kevin's short course.
Kevin gave us materials before the class and extensive examples to refer to. His preparation was excellent and we wasted little time in such tasks as finding the examples. It was an extremely productive, efficient training.
You can probably already tell I highly recommend Kevin as a teacher. But just in case you somehow missed my point: HIRE THIS GUY! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Review of Kevin Ruse, February 09, 2009
Kevin was my instructor for a week long training session for XML based technologies. As a former High School teacher I pay close attention to instructional styles and rapport with the students. Kevin displays a unique ability to demonstrate a high mastery of his subject matter mixed with an effective teaching methodology. This combination is rare for this type of training. If you are thinking about taking a course from Kevin, I would give him my full recommendation. He is an excellent instructor!

Review of Kevin Ruse, February 09, 2009
Kevin is that rare teacher who understands the material thoroughly and can offer students both the conceptual overview and the nitty-gritty technical details. I have taken 2 courses from Kevin and he receives my highest rating as an instructor because he has such a solid technical grasp of the material.
Additionally, Kevin is an author of computer books, so long after the class is over, his written efforts serve as excellent reference materials.
I was very fortunate to receive 2 custom courses with Kevin. The areas that I needed to have covered in class were written down in detail prior to the class, and by the time the class started, Kevin had assembled a comprehensive set of instructions and lessons that addressed all my desired curriculum.
Things I learned in my classes of a few years ago are still being used. I have no higher rating for a computer technical teacher. Kevin is right up there at the top of the list.
