I have been teaching for over 20 years after my completion of three years of study at The American Center for the Alexander Technique, Inc. (ACAT), the oldest teacher training program in the U.S., and certifications from ACAT and from American Society for the Alexander Technique, a national accreditation organization. I have been certified, after a one-year course of study in the Art of Breathing, to teach breathing coordination in conjunction with the Alexander Technique. I have taught at The Juilliard School in its AT required curriculum for all students. I have private practices in New York City, Norwalk, CT, and Santa Fe, NM, and train future teachers as a member of the Senior Faculty at ACAT. I have conducted workshops in New York City, Switzerland and Italy and taught in a physical therapy facility in Mt. Kisco, NY. Besides people with common, everyday misuse conditions, such as back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome, I have worked with professional musicians, actors and singers and have helped students with such neurological conditions as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease and spinal cord injury.
The Alexander Technique is an internationally-recognized method of teaching improved use of the body by training the student to develop a personal life skill involving both mind and body. The student learns how unconscious habits of coordination and movement contribute to difficulties in performance and how these habits can be modified. The Alexander Technique can provide the skills to improve movement, balance and stillness. It has been recognized in a study published in 2008 in the British Medical Journal for its efficacy in reducing back pain.
