About Me

Miss Tess teaches private piano, voice, composition, and theory lessons in her magical house near Golden Gardens. She conducts two levels of the Seattle Girls' Choir and is Assistant Artistic Director of Ancora, a women's choir comprised of Seattle Girls' Choir alumnae and women from the Puget Sound area.

Miss Tess began her choral experience in 1990 at the age of 8 when she joined the Seattle Girls' Choir. Over the next ten years she was promoted through the levels until she graduated in Rome, Italy, in 2000. Miss Tess completed her classical piano degree at Cornish College of the Arts where she studied with Dr. Peter Mack. While in college she was an accompanist for three levels of the Seattle Girls' Choir, and after graduation she was hired as a conductor for two of those same choir levels. Other choral experiences include the St. Paul's Episcopal Church choir in Seattle, and the professional choir, Choral Arts Northwest, directed by Dr. Richard Sparks.

Miss Tess takes great pride in the one-on-one work she does with her private students. Each individual has a story to tell and create, and she strives to have her lessons illustrate those stories. Many of her students have reached one hundred lessons and more (she writes down the number of each lesson to track progress), and one of her students is quickly approaching her two-hundredth lesson. Miss Tess thrives on the opera (great work) of such students, seeing them grow as musicians and people over years. She is happy in her life's work.

Miss Tess is not only a great musician in terms of technique and talent, she is a gifted teacher. She knows her students, their interests and their motivations well, and uses that knowledge to find ways of inspiring them to achieve tasks they find daunting. She appreciates their individual gifts and keeps them interested and motivated.

She almost makes me want to learn Latin.

    Teacher's Response:

Thanks so much, Eileen. This means a lot to me and I can totally hear it in your voice. I'm really excited for what the fall can bring to Abby, and hope to see her blossom into her talent more and more.

As one of Miss Tess' colleagues, I've had the opportunity to eavesdrop on quite a few of her lessons. Over time, I have developed an immense sense of admiration for her and her love of music.

Her infectious smile and warm demeanor seem to put even the most nervous students into a state of calm readiness to perform and learn. As other reviews have stated, her lessons are very individualized, with consideration for students' goals, tastes, learning styles, physiology, and more. I'm perpetually surprised by her ability to coax astonishing results and dedication from her students without being stern or intimidating.

Students of all ages and levels of development benefit from her immense breadth of knowledge and formal training. But what truly distinguishes Miss Tess is the spirit with which she teaches and relates to her students.

Miss Tess is a wonderful teacher and an excellent role model for young musicians. She's my first recommendation!

I have learned so much from Miss Tess. After more than 150 lessons, Tess has been one of the most influential forces in my musical education. The thing I like most about my lessons with Miss Tess is that she makes our time fun, and we play games and chat and such. But I learn so much at the same time.

I have known Miss Tess since 2000, when we first attended school together, and she has been an inspiration and support as a collegue ever since. She is an excellent musician and works well with all people, using her skills to explain and understand creatively, allowing her to teach and to learn in all situations. She is a natural teacher and musican, and I look forward to many more years in her company!

Aaron is a hybrid of rock star and theory geek - a combination which makes him a unique and awesome teacher. This laid-back academic can work with a myriad of ages and abilities. I've eavesdropped on a number of his lessons and have seen him encourage the roughest of beginners with a presence that keeps the process fresh. If you know a little one just starting out, or haven't picked up your own guitar in years, this teacher can inspire you to play and enjoy the music you create.
