Rene's Drum Studio

Portland, OR

Introduction

I'm an experienced performer that loves to teach and impart my love of music to the student. I offer a fun learning environment, while working with the student to meet his or her goals. From beginners to advanced, I teach Rock, Jazz, Latin, Reading, Rudiments, and drum set. I have a great Sellwood studio with two drum sets. I do two recitals a year, and teach the student how to not only perform, but how to be a professional, well-rounded musician.

My Teaching Background
BA Music from Lewis & Clark College. I've studied with some of the best drum teachers that Oregon has to offer: Sam Henry, Don Worth Sr., Mark Goodenberger, Brett Paschal, and Alan Jones. I'm also an active member of the NW Music Scene in my band, Here Comes Everybody. I have tons of live performing experience, recording and touring experience as well as band managerial experience. I've played small stages and opened up for national acts both as a drummer and keyboardist. I've played with some amazing musicians including: Gary Barone, John Faddis (nationally acclaimed jazz trumpet player and Dizzy Gillespie's protoge), Tex Beneke ("Chattanooga Choo-Choo" and other great big band hits). I've been teaching for over 15 years, but I've been a performer for over 25 years. I've given drum clinics and attended master classes from Ed Shaunessy, Terry Bozzio, Poncho Sanchez, Chad Wackerman, Elvin Jones and many more. With my band, I've been interviewed and have performed on radio shows and various TV shows including Good Day Oregon and more recently (August 2008) Outlook Portland with David Bragdon.
My Teaching Philosophy
I tailor each student's lesson to their skill level and help to them achieve their goals. I believe that a well-rounded musician is always better and strive to make sure all my students have exposure to as many different styles of music as possible. I hope that my students will be the kind of drummer that everyone wants around. Not only is it good to be a rockin' drummer and a strong player, but it's important to know how to be a responsible person in your musical pursuits. Lessons are somewhat structured, but relaxed and fun.
Rates And Availability

In order to keep music accessible, I try to keep my rates reasonable at $35 per 45- minute lesson. I no longer travel to student's homes. Lessons are taught in my Sellwood Studio and recitals are held in Sellwood at the SMILE station on 13th Avenue.
