Ryan Janus has been teaching music almost as long as he has been involved in it. Formally, his teaching experience began in his college years with a couple private students and coaching of marching band percussion sections. While still an undergraduate student, Mr. Janus was teaching Aural Skills in a formal classroom situation. He continued teaching privately through his undergraduate years at Hope College and his graduate years at the University of South Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Music in performance degree from Hope and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from USF, graduating both institutions Magna Cum Laude. Mr. Janus earned a perfect 4.0 GPA at the latter institution.
Immediately after earning his Masters' degree, Mr. Janus received a position to teach at his old alma mater, Hope College. He taught there for five years in the following capacities: Music Theory, Aural Skills, Keyboard Skills, Percussion Ensemble, Music Appreciation, Jazz Ensemble coaching, and studio saxophone instructor. In addition, Mr. Janus maintained a large private saxophone studio. Several of his students have gone on to earn advanced degrees and/or have successful careers as musicians and teachers. During his summers, Mr. Janus continued coaching marching band percussion sections as well as teaching on the faculties of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and the Aquinas College Jazz Camp.
These days, Mr. Janus's job in the Air Force Academy Band takes much of his time away from teaching, which he sorely misses. However, he still finds time to teach saxophone, theory and jazz flute at the Broadmoor Academy of Music. Mr. Janus is available to teach saxophone, clarinet, flute, piano, and beginning oboe and bassoon. He also coaches an Advanced Placement Music Theory prep course on demand.

Review of Ryan Janus, February 09, 2009
Ryan Janus was my saxophone teacher during a small portion of my high school career, but the things I learned from him have gone on to follow me for years. Ryan was always a patient teacher and always gave great constructive criticism. He taught me how to be technically proficient and more musical in my classical playing and also greatly improved my jazz playing. He started me doing all the right things--forming habits in high school that have helped me succeed in college, especially taking individual measures of music and mastering them, then piecing these parts together to form a whole piece. In addition to this, Ryan helped me through the logistics of music (in jazz especially). We talked about how to get gigs and many more aspects of music that are often forgotten by many other teachers. This advice from a seasoned veteran is something not to be taken for granted, and I appreciate every little piece of advice he gave me. Take saxophone lessons (or any other lesson, for that matter) from Ryan Janus--not only will you not be disappointed, you'll be very glad you did.

Review of Ryan Janus, February 01, 2009
I have really enjoyed working with Ryan Janus. He is attentive in lessons and always has more advice. I have learned a bunch of technique from him that i would not have from other teachers. The only inconvenient thing is that sometimes he doesn't return your calls. But overall I have had a wonderful experience and hope to keep on working hard at the saxophone.

Teacher's Response:
In my defense, it was the phone's fault (seriously), and she knows that now. :)
