  • "Great coaches"

Review of San Francisco Youth Fencing, January 14, 2009

Rob and Connie Handelman are very dedicated and passionate coaches. excellent with kids! my son has tried many different sports but none lasted long. He fell in love with fencing since TWO years ago the first time took class with Rob and Connie and he has not complained a thing about fencing, about his coaches, about his fencing mates, about Halberstadt fencing club...i'd highly recommend Rob and connie's classes at Halberstadt!

This is a great program for our daughter, who loves fencing. Rob is a great youth coach. He is an expert in the sport and knows his young athletes. He has the right level of expectation for a youth fencer developing skill and passion for the sport. They work hard, but they also play and have fun. The other great thing is that Connie Handelman is SFYF team. I like the fact my daughter also has a woman coach who can help bring out the best in a young girl athlete.

I highly recommend SFYC. I think Rob and Connie are building a fabulous group of young fencers.

  • "Great for kids"

Review of San Francisco Youth Fencing, November 25, 2008

Our daughter has been going for about a year. She loves it. We love it. The class starts of with some stretching, aerobic and strength exercises. Then kids break up into groups for their bouts (they wear all the necessary uniforms and safety equipment), hook up on the strips and have their matches. They are rotated through this and their individual lessons so the instruction is germane and can be used immediately. Afterwards, there are some coordination games before the class ends.

Rob and Connie are great with the kids. They're very patient and never seem to get upset. They take no guff or slackers, instead working with the kids as a group so everyone gets to take part and learn. The older kids from the other classes are there to help out also. The lessons and exercises are fun and easy to learn; we even do some of these at home for practice for all of us.

The kids learn the terminology, techniques, and etiquette that are part of this sport. The use of the exercises, games, and lessons are a perefect blend that keeps the kids interested and motivated to continue on. They just started a challenge ladder for the kids, so now there's more motivation to practice and get better.

There are now 2 girls in our class, possibly 3 in the near future. Our daughter has lots of fun and learns to take care of herself with the boys during the bouts.

    Highly recommended

Prior to joining this program, our son fenced a week at another club but did not show much interest in the sport. We stumbled across this program while surfing the net and thought we'll let him try fencing again at this program. We are so glad to have found Rob and Connie, who are great coaches and are very enthusiastic about the sport. They work well with children and helped my son fit in with the rest of the group through games and activities. Their organized program along with the nurturing sparked my son's interest, and now, he looks forward to the program each week. We'd also like to add that the other children helped my son feel "at home" when he first joined the program. After over a year of fencing, we have noticed how fencing has brought out the assertiveness in our son both in school and other parts of his life.

  • "Best Fencing Coaches For Kids"

Review of San Francisco Youth Fencing, November 20, 2008

My son Ethan has been attending Rob and Connie’s fencing classes for the last year 1 ½ years. He started when he turned 7 and loved the class from day 1. Both Rob and Connie strike a great balance between being serious coaches yet also allowing the kids to learn at their own pace and most importantly have fun. They treat each child as an individual – honing their strengths and helping to build skills where needed. Ethan has gained both a love of fencing as well as coordination and muscles by being a part of this wonderful club.
