"Carl Reinecke's Flute Concerto, hyperconservative for 1908 but gorgeous, brought to life by flutist Sara Jolivet, Roupen Shakarian, and Philharmonia Northwest." ~ Seattle Weekly News ~ "The High Notes ~ Remembering a year of classical triumphs." by Gavin Borchert, 2004.

A native Olympian, Sara has been an active flutist locally and nationally. She studied privately in middle school and high school with Zart Dombourian-Eby, piccoloist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. During those early years, she participated and won awards in local and state competitions, including placing each of the first three years of the Seattle Flute Society Horsfall Competition, landing first place her senior year. She participated twice in the National Flute Association High School Flute Choir, winning the honor through nation-wide auditions.

Sara continued her further studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York with Bonita Boyd. While a flute performance major there, she performed with such honorary groups as the prestigious Eastman Wind Ensemble.

Througout her educational career, Sara has studied with many outstanding flutists other than her primary teachers, including Amy Porter - Professor of Flute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Walfrid Kujala - Former Chicago Symphony Orchestra Piccoloist; Julius Baker - Former New York Philharmonic Principal Flutist, Former Professor of Flute at the Juilliard School of Music; Richard Graef - Assistant Principal Flutist, Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Doriot Anthony Dwyer - Former Boston Symphony Orchestra Piccoloist; Paul Horn - Jazz Flutist.

Among her solo appearances, Sara was invited to play The Star Spangled Banner for the Seattle Thunderbirds Hockey Team and performed in the Governor’s Mansion Concert Series on two different occasions. She has performed as soloist with many local groups including the Olympia Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonia Northwest.

Currently, Sara teaches privately, is the faculty flute instructor at North Seattle Community College, and is a band assistant with the Northshore School District. She has taught ages ranging from 5-65 and is comfortable with all levels. Many of her students have followed in her path, winning local and state competitions, participating in honor groups throughout the Northwest, and continuing on to earn bachelors and masters degrees in flute performance. Her areas of interest include, but are not limited to, college audition and competition preparation, lapsed flutists, those with special needs, and musician injury recovery.

She shares her home with a brilliant bassoonist, four dogs, two cats, and a kiddy wading pond full of water turtles. Her non-musical interests include Boston Terrier Rescue, special needs animal care, native plant gardening, and the outdoors.
