I can hardly believe how lucky we are to have Shaun as a cello teacher for my son, Marinus. While Shaun is always friendly and gentle, he sets high yet reasonable musical and technical standards. He has a unique ability to engage my son while creating a learning environment that encourages Marinus to tap into his own innate learning process. He gently guides and shows Marinus the way through example allowing the natural learning process, curiosity, and passion for music in my son to take precedence. As a result the process is fun, natural and exciting, allowing Marinus to be himself, own his accomplishments every step of the way and feel empowered with each step he takes. Marinus loves his lessons, and it is a great pleasure to watch his energy and enthusiasm unfold while he is studying with Shaun. Being a composer as well, lessons take place in the vicinity of a state of the art recording studio. He is exposed not only to classical music but to different musical styles, cultures and instruments. And beyond all this, Shaun truly is a great mentor and role model for my son, an inspiration and a teacher who is definitely making a difference in Marinus’ life!
To rap up some of Marinus’s accomplishments; within about six months of his first lesson with Shaun, Marinus advanced to be the best cello player in his school orchestra, was promoted prematurely to play in the advanced group, where he is also at the top, and became part of the orchestra’s honor ensemble. With two others from his school orchestra group, he was selected to play a solo performance at the school’s recent winter concert, and last summer he successfully completed the auditions for two youth symphony orchestras and is now playing in the Cascade Youth Symphony Orchestras.

I am an older student with previous experience playing violin and viola. I chose Shaun as a teacher because of the beauty of his compositions and his philosophy of teaching as expressed on his website.
To study with Shaun is to be empowered to discover my own musicality. Whether playing the simplest of music, a scale or etude, or attempting the Bach Cello Suites, Shaun has the ability to nurture and allow to flourish what is already in me. With each step he is helping me to discover the beauty in every note and nuance, to study harmony, to use each measure as an opportunity to reconnect and go deeper into the musical self that lay dormant for many years.
He helps me to discover, develop and grow in my personal connection with the cello and to express the sounds I desire through proper understanding of the mechanisms and techniques that make control of the instrument easier, more efficient and graceful.
Shaun is a gifted musician, and a generous teacher. If you come to each lesson prepared and ready to learn, you will achieve the technical skill needed to succeed on the instrument empowering you to discover your own musical gifts.

Shaun Paul has been giving cello lessons to my grandson for over a year now. I have observed excellent teaching techniques that have inspired, encouraged, and informed while never becoming impatient or irritated. He will meet the student where they are at that time and lead the student to improve by emphasizing their stronger areas and showing techniques to improve their weaker ones. This is the type of teacher that you would have wished for as you were going through your school years. Thank you so much Shaun.

Shaun Paul is a wonderful cello teacher! He is passionate about music, and shares this joy with his students. He has taught 2 of my children, ages 10 and 13. "Shaun Paul encourages and supports improvising, and playing your favorite rock tunes by ear" (from the 13 yr old).

My mother's friend recommended Shaun Paul when I was looking for a cello teacher. I have been learning the art of cello from Shaun Paul since 2006. I started playing the cello in middle school and I have really enjoyed it ever since. My technique has improved so much during the last two years when I was at Tyee Middle School that the conductor Ms. Heather DeHart named me as the most improved student from the entire eighth grade. My improvement simply shows that Shaun is a FABULOUS teacher. I have learned a tremendous amount covering everything from thumb position, double stops, scales, etudes, proper and effective techniques, good tuning, and great solo pieces. What I love most about the lessons is playing duets. It is simply a joy to play such beautiful music with another cellist. The beautiful melody and harmony blend into beautiful music. Shaun is a great teacher. I would consider Shaun more than a good teacher, he is also my mentor and friend.
