Shelley Brucar fiber art

Buffalo Grove, IL

I am driven to create! I always loved looking at and touching fabrics, absolutely captivated by the colors and the textures of cloth.

I now create my own fabric. Hand-dyeing gives each piece of cloth a luxuriant and alluring quality and brilliant color. I use painting, photo transfer, threads, and other surface design elements that the piece demands, going wherever the design takes me. My favorite studio moment is when I can step back from the design wall, liking what I see and knowing that the art has evolved on its own; I become a part of the process.

A long-time interest in photography made it natural for me to combine photos with cloth. My current work often starts with a photograph I have taken near home or when traveling. The photograph is used for inspiration, and whole or partial photos may be printed on fabric and included in a quilt.

My work is inspired by nature. I have always been awed by the beauty and splendor of mountains, waterfalls and forests. I believe the tactile nature of fabric makes this medium ideal for studying texture and perspective. In my art, I try to convey a sense of peace and serenity, and I want the viewer to step into that moment.

Teaching fiber art adds a new dimension to my work. My classes are meant to be fun as well as educational. I love to give students a pattern and then teach them how to create and design without using a pattern.

I am interested in teaching art quilting for local guilds.
