Review of Shirley Cook, April 04, 2009
I signed up for Beadmaking I class at BAGI in San Jose. While I am a glass lover, I had no previous experience working with glass. Shirley has and easy-going style, with a nice sense of humor (class was fun) and she provided us with lots of examples of real-world situations as well as class samples.
Shirley did a great job of walking us through the process and explaining everything.
The demonstrations were excellent.... Shirley explained technique as well as tips while she did the demo. And I felt like I was equiped to try everything she showed us.
Then as we all practiced what she just showed us, she gave detailed input and direction. Always in a direct, constructive fashion.
Shirley is a true artist and mentor. I am hoping to follow in her footsteps!
Lisa

Lisa, it was so much fun having you in class! You've made wonderful progress, and I hope to see you in some upcoming classes. You'll just love the metals class, particularly the "oooh aaah" moment of the final technique! Have I gotten you curious enough yet? ;-) Thanks for your wicked good sense of humor, always appreciate a fellow New Englander!

Review of Shirley Cook, April 02, 2009
I took her Beadmaking 1 class at BAGI in San Jose. This class is perfect for those who are new to glass beadmaking and want a good solid foundation of the craft. Shirley is clear, concise and walks you through the beadmaking process in a positive and patient manner. There is also ample time to practice making beads and getting one-on-one help from a master who truly loves her craft.
Teacher's Response:
Thanks, Helen! I enjoyed having you in class, and I'm so glad to see that you want to continue with the bead making - you're doing really well. Hope you can make it to my "metals" class before you leave California!

This class is a great experience, and Shirley Cook is a wonderful teacher. The class will teach you to make round glass beads, something not as simple as it sounds. Shirley will teach you the basics that most people just do, but she has figured out how to teach. She has great visual aids, so you can see where to place the next dot in the series. And it is great fun to boot!
She is also very generous with her knowledge. We wanted to learn to make fish, and on the last class we learned how to make fish. Another friend in a different date of this class wanted to learn to make the beautiful blossoms and leaves that Shirley makes. That is the last class of beadmaking 2, but Shirley was kind enough to show her how to do it, and worked with her until she was able to do it.
It is great class and a great experience. You can see the improvement in your beads with every class you take.
Teacher's Response:
Thanks, Kathy! I thoroughly enjoyed having you in my classes, you really livened them up! It was great seeing you again up at Arrow Springs, hope you come to more meetings. And I'm looking forward to having you in some upcoming classes - just waiting for Chris to post the dates!

"Highly recommend Shirley Cook - glass bead making"

The old adage "Those that can, do. Those who can't, teach" does NOT apply to Shirley. Her own work is magnificent if not inspiring. With beginners, Shirley is patient and methodical. With more experienced bead makers, Shirley is very generous with her vast knowledge.
I would highly recommend Shirley for any level of torch bead work.
Teacher's Response:
Thanks, Teresa! I really enjoyed having you in the classes, and you're doing extremely well on the torch. Missed you up at Arrow Springs, I hope to see you in my "Working with metals" class!
