Sumitra has a professional dance background in classical ballet. She was a 10 year resident and teacher at Mt. Madonna Yoga Center/School, an intentional community devoted to the study and teaching of Ashtanga yoga . She has been teaching asana for nineteen years & received her certification from the Ashtanga Yoga Institute at the Mount Madonna Center in California. She studied Ayureveda with Dr. Vasant Lad and has developed a life style of applying the principles of Ayurveda, the science of longevity. She is the owner and creative force of a photography and design business with seven years of success in creating logos, promotional graphics, web design, and photography for businesses and individuals.
Among her clients are Olympus Medical Instruments, Avalon Art & Yoga, Mount Madonna Center for the Creative Arts & Sciences, The Art of Peter Max Gallery, Healing Circles Chiropropractic Yoga Rehabilitation Center, Samantha Shakti, and Bentley of Los Gatos.
Her love of photography, including location and studio photography, began in 1980. She was initially employed as a designer for Lotus Leather of Mt. Shasta, California. To the delight of her employer, her photos were chosen for an international advertising campaign by North Beach Leather. This was the beginning of her labor of love.
Her work has appeared in many publications including: Women's Wear Daily, Yoga Journal, Sunset Magazine, Pathways, Artworks, The East Bay Monthly, and Bed and Breakfast Stops.
As a photographer, she is acknowledged for her ability to not only take a technically perfect photo, but for possessing the unique talent of being able to capture the inner light of her subject.
